A non-stick skillet is an engineered surface strictly for the purpose of other materials to stick to it. A common application of non-stick cookware or skillet is into foods are allowed to get brown without sticking to the pan with non-stick coating. The Non-stick skillet is often referred to as surfaces coated with a polytetrafluoroethylene, a popularly known brand of Teflon. The modern non-stick pans were manufactured with the use of a coating of Teflon, a form of polytetrafluoroethylene. Over the years, Non-stick skillet/pans have been used by some of the early Mycenaean Greeks in the production of bread. The ceramics griddles of Mycenaean have a smooth side and a side covered with holes that are tiny. Since the dough tends to stick during cooking on the smooth side of the pan, similarly the bread was placed on the side of the holes. The hole is one of the ancient non-sticking technologies making sure that oil circulates throughout the griddle.
How does Non-Stick Skillet work?
If an experiment of magnification can be done on a metal pan with microscopes, it would be deduced that its surface is covered and ragged with several nooks and crannies. When the metal pans are heated, the pores tend to enlarge, making the food to stick and solidify. A metal pan can be coated with oil to minimize that tendency of sticking. The metal fissures are filled so that food can come in or a pan that has been coated with non-stick materials such as PTFE can be used which also fills the pores of the pan making it smooth, soft and non-stick.
A non-stick skillet is quite different from other varieties of pans in that it requires some fat or oil in order to prevent hot foods from sticking to the surface of the pan. The tendency at which different foods stick on a non-stick surface is different. When less oil or fats or even no oil at all are much easier to clean as the residues do not stick to the surface.
The coating can be scratched by utensils that are coated with PTFE. This can only be prevented by using non-metallic cooking tools like plastic or woods. Studies have shown that in the production of pan gravy, the pans that are non-stick are so much beneficial the foods that stick to them and pan gravy can also be formed by deglazing them or getting them dissolved in liquids.
